It used to be that the only way to achieve a straighter smile was with uncomfortable and unsightly metal wires and brackets. Today, there is a wonderful alternative in Invisalign. These clear aligners gradually shift teeth into a new position in a more comfortable process that doesn’t get in the way of your lifestyle.
Invisalign can be used to treat issues such as:
The Invisalign aligners are made of a multilayer, plastic material. They are custom-made, creating a snug fit over the teeth, and are virtually invisible. Even those who are looking directly at you may not detect them when they’re being worn. They work by applying the right amount of pressure at the right place and time on the teeth. Each set of aligners is slightly different to gradually shift your teeth into their new position.
Before beginning the treatment, you’ll have a consultation with your Invisalign doctor to discuss your goals and to create a custom treatment plan. Your doctor will be able to show you a preview of your new smile and a simulation of how your teeth will be moving. Once the aligners are created, you will generally wear a new set of aligners every week. Adjustments can be made, if necessary. For the treatment to be successful, you will need to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day; removing them is allowed for eating and cleaning (you will need to brush and floss as normal). You will need to visit the dentist approximately every six weeks to check on the progress of your teeth. Once treatment is completed, you will need to wear a retainer in order to prevent the teeth from shifting back into place.
The length of your treatment depends on the severity of the case. However, the average treatment time is about 12 months for adults. Invisalign can also be used for teens, but the treatment time may vary.
